  1.       Bug Detection on Home phones

  4. First of all to test for bugs, you
  5. need a VOM (Multimeter) the higher
  6. the impedance the better (a Digital 
  7. with FET circuitry or a Vacuum Tube
  8. Volt Meter is the best).
  9.  
  10. First disconnect the phone line(s) AT
  11. BOTH ENDS.  Undo the phone instrument 
  12. and hook it up to the entry point of
  13. the phone line from the outside world
  14. (Ma Bell does not like you cut her off
  15. completely.)  The scheme is the physi-
  16. cally isolate your house, apartment, etc
  17. from the outside world.  But before you
  18. do this measure the line voltage (It 
  19. should be approximately 48 Volts).
  20.  
  21. Now with the wires disconnected at both
  22. ee set your resistance scale to a
  23. high reading and measure the resistance
  24. of the phone line, it should be very
  25. high on the order of million ohms or 
  26. more, this is the normal condition, 
  27. since you are measuring the resistance
  28. of an open circuit. If it is much less,
  29. say 50-100Kohms then you a device on
  30. the line that does not belong there,
  31. probably a parall disconnected
  32. wire and go to the other end and 
  33. measure the resistance of this.  This
  34. resistance should be about one ohm or
  35. two at the most in a big house with a
  36. lot of phones.  If it is more, then
  37. you probably have a series bug.
  38.  
  39. If in the first case, taking parallel
  40. measurements using a meter (not LED/
  41. LCD) and you notice a "kick" in the
  42. needle, you probably have a line tap
  43.  
  44. Now if you also make a measurement with
  45. the wire end twisted together and you
  46. notice the resistance reads about
  47. 1-2kohms, then you may have a drop-out
  48. relay.  A drop-out relay is a relay
  49. that senses a phone going off hook, and
  50. signals a tape recorder to start record-
  51. ing.  
  52.  
  53. Another test to do with the phones still
  54. hooked up to the outside world, on hook
  55. voltage is about 48 Volts and off hook
  56. is about 6-10 Volts.  Any other con-
  57. ditions may mean telephone surveillance.
  58.  
  59. If you use a Wide Range Audio frequency
  60. generator and call you house, apartment,
  61. etc. from another phone and sweep up and
  62. down the spectrum, and you notice the
  63. phone answers itself somewhere in the
  64. sweep you probably have an infinity
  65. transmitter on your line. 
  66.  
  67. The above information tells nothing 
  68. aut TELCO taps at the central office,
  69. or anywhere else along the line, but
  70. this information may tell you that your
  71. wife, girlfriend(boyfriend), or business
  72. associate may be monitoring your phone
  73. activities.

  75. An Infinity transmitter, is a neat device
  76. It allows you to call the bugged place
  77. and it shuts off the ringer and defeats
  78. the switchhook, so the mouthpiece now
  79. becomes a room bug.  It was orginally
  80. sold from the travelling business man
  81. to make sure his wife was safe at home
  82. not being attacked (or fucking her 
  83. boyfriend behind his back).
